This blog has started off mainly as a record of my activities nowadays, as well as a record of my work as a pioneer, using the Web as a tool for communicative language learning. I tell about my current art courses and exhibitions, and give links to my online art galleries. Most of the family photos in the Gallery so far are either very old (late 19th Century). I also include some photos and plan to add quite many nature photos during the last part of 2009 and later. The photo above is one taken of me sitting in the garden at my home in East Sussex, England, when I was very young. I hope you like it:-) Who knows where this blog will lead:-) Please let me know what YOU’d like me to tell you about!

My name is Brian Vowles and I own an historic house in staffordshire called Biddulph Old Hall. I am doing research into its history and the history of its occupants. The house was owned in the 1860′s by your great, great grandparents James and Maria Bateman (who made the gardens at Biddulph Grange, now in the care of The National Trust). I came across your grandmother’s paintings on the writeit website and am particularly interested in your grandmother’s brother Henry Ulick Burke and his descendants. I would be grateful for any information or photographs, particularly about his birth and early life, which I believe was in India. I do hope you can help, Best Wishes, Brian.
Hi Brian. Thank you for your comment and your interest in my grandmother’s paintings, and for the new information about your home and gardens:-) I’m sorry I didn’t notice the comment earlier. I’d love to see some recent photos of the house and garden. I can rearrange my family photos in my blog so the public can see them. I do have some old family photos on line at http://www.writeit.to/ruth/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=27 You need to use the password ‘family’ to see them though, I believe. The family, understandably, did not want the current photos to be visible.
I can put you in touch with one of my brothers, Gordon John Humphreys. He has combined the family photos and many old family documents and put together 5 Volumes of the Burke family history from 1845 onwards. I have them on paper, and some on CDs but Gordon has the originals. We also have very good family trees done my maternal grandfather, John Humphreys. The one on my wall goes back to Edward III. I live in Finland nowadays, but Gordon lives in Bath, UK. His email is gordonhumphreys38 (at) btinternet.com
Do keep in touch:-)
